PROMPT CORNER SHOW

The South London Theatre Youth Group Present

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST

BY OSCAR WILDE

A Trivial Comedy for Serious People

Wednesday 9th April - Saturday 12th April at 8pm, with a matinee performance Saturday 12th at 2pm

Often described as the wittiest comedy in the English language "The Importance of Being Earnest" contains all of Wilde's best qualities; wit, elegance and paradox. These qualities - the only ones Wilde took seriously - are beautifully interwoven in this delicious script that cannot fail to make you marvel at the man's genius, and, more importantly, paralyse you with laughter.

The wit and paradox that sparkle from each line seem deceptively simple and yet contain epigrams that are still worthy of consideration in our modern, liberal world. Rather than mere gossamers of shimmering language they express Wilde's serious views on society and human relationships. As a seminal work of the English canon, it is more than likely that you have seen it performed in the past. However, the charming humour that you have heard, read, performed a million times before never loses it's incredible power to amuse, inform and entertain.

Amusing, informing and entertaining you this time around will be the SLT Youth Group. After their success last year with "Hamlet: A Murder Mystery", they have again approached a difficult piece of theatre and risen to the challenge. Every facet of this production contains the fingerprints of different members of the group - lighting, sound, set and direction. We proudly present their hard work in early April; book early to support the next generation of the SLT and to enjoy an evening of wicked cleverness and fun.

"I am so clever that sometimes I don't understand a single word of what I am saying" - Oscar Wilde
