"Wings" and "The Doll's House"
SATURDAY MORNING, 7th April. Time, once again to get the little one up and perform. Mum looked nervous and/or Dad looked down proudly. Oh, puhleeze, that's too much information!! Durr I'm talking about the Infants, Juniors and Intermediate boys and girls preparing to act on the stage for, for many of them, the first time.
At 12.30pm nineteen Caterpillars entered from the "Wings" of Prompt Corner. These were the 5 - 9 year-olds from Joanna's class who came on looking proud, nervous, military, pretty and lovely as indeed caterpillars are. Don't call me lovely, my name is Bond, Caterpillar Bond!! The boys, in their dreams (literally), became macho rôle models such as Ninja, Bond, fireman, sailor whilst the girls dreamily turned into butterflies. Not "politically correct", perhaps, but their choice. The Boys uniforms were requisitioned from the S.L.T. Wardrobe whilst the girls costumes and wings were home grown. Finally they were successfully steered through their Titanic dance routine with the help of our very own sound and light man (Captain) Ian Mill.
Five parents then helped to fly the butterflies up to the Rehearsal Room ready for the ten members of the Intermediate Group (10 - 13 year-olds) to enter "The Doll's House". This was constructed with meticulous planning and craftwomanship by Fleur and was spookily (in keeping with the plat) the name of former teacher Lorraine's own house.
The play, which was conceived, written and performed by the Intermediate Group over a period of three months was a semi-ghost story starting in Victorian times and ending in the present. It dealt with poor versus rich and grass always being greener. Pythonesque, unintentionally moral and very honestly performed.
Parents helped out in Box Office, helped out on and off stage and over seventy attended in Prompt Corner. All the children were cast and they all turned up. £272 was collected and I won the Grand National sweepstake in The Two Towers. A truly great day.
